Michelin Announces 2020 Stars for Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo

Michelin recently announced that it would hold off on releasing starred selections for Singapore due to long COVID-19-related restaurant closures in the city. But that’s not the case for its newest guide in Brazil, a country that was nonetheless hard hit by the pandemic. Last week, Michelin announced its 2020 stars for Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, with two new additions to the list.

Oteque in Rio de Janeiro moves up to the two-star category after debuting with one star in the 2019 guide. The tasting menu from chef Alberto Landgraf prioritizes locally and ethically sourced ingredients with a special focus on seafood. São Paulo also gets a new two-star restaurant with Ryo Gastronomia, a Japanese restaurant helmed by chef Edson Yamashita. Each city now boasts two two-star restaurants, the highest distinction from Michelin in Brazil; there have been no three-star restaurants in the country since Michelin started covering it in 2015.

There are just 10 one-star restaurants on the list this year, three in Rio de Janeiro and 7 in São Paulo. This list actually shrunk from 15 restaurants last year. Still, the Michelin guides’ international director Gwendal Poullennec says the cities “must be applauded in the uncertain and difficult period that the profession is going through at a time of global health crisis.”

The 2020 Michelin guide also includes 39 Bib Gourmand selections and 115 Michelin Plates. Here’s the full list of Michelin stars for the two cities:
