Worldwide: The Sustainable Hospitality Alliance (SHA) has improved its Hotel Carbon Measurement Initiative (HCMI) based on user feedback and work by Cornell University’s Center for Hospitality Research.

The updated version of the HCMI aligns with the latest Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol guidance with the support of Greenview, an energy maintenance and service company.

It is free to use and helps hotels to track carbon reduction progress. It can be built into existing systems or used as a stand-alone tool.

HCMI is already used by over 30,000 hotels under brands including Hyatt, Marriott, Radisson and Scandic, as well as some business travel platforms.

The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), the American Hotel and Lodging Association (AHLA), and the Global Business Travel Association (GBTA) will incorporate the HCMI into the guidance offered to members of each organisation.

Glenn Mandziuk, CEO of the Sustainable Hospitality Alliance, said: “With sustainability rightly becoming an increasingly important focus for the industry and their guests, clients, investors and suppliers, it is vital that the industry has the tools to measure and monitor their impact, and can be accurately recognised for their progress.

“We therefore all need to be speaking the same language by using consistent and robust methods and we are proud to be updating the Hotel Carbon Measurement Initiative, which will enable everyone to focus on minimising negative impacts and accelerate action towards net positive hospitality for people and planet.”
