UK: Extended stay brand Supercity Aparthotels has launched its first ESG report, aiming to achieve Scope 1 and 2 net zero carbon emissions by 2040.

The ESG report identifies three key areas where Supercity will execute its net zero carbon strategy:

1. Opportunity – focussed on diversity, equity and inclusion within the workplace, offering training and development to all team members.

2. Community – Supercity will aim to recruit locally and look to partner with homeless charities to raise funds and offer services.

3. Responsibility – operational initiatives to source goods and products compliant with sustainability standards, as well as reducing environmental impact. This includes removing single-use plastics by the end of 2023, not sending any waste to landfill, minimising the use of water, and reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions with a view to capture data from 2023 and report annually on progress.

Regarding Scope 3 emissions, the report details that Supercity will undertake an analysis of its supply chain to understand where improvements can be made and implement a targeted reduction strategy.

Philip Houghton, managing director at Supercity, said: “Recent history has been very challenging for the hospitality sector. Supercity Aparthotels navigated this challenging period maintaining our founding values and doing our best to support our colleagues and communities through a number of initiatives. As we have returned to more normal trading energies have been redoubled towards our ESG agenda with many initiatives agreed and actioned as quickly as we could to “do the right thing”.

“This inaugural annual report aims to share what progress has been made, but importantly, to be honest with the gaps we have in our knowledge and what actions we commit to take this year and beyond to improve our knowledge and work towards reducing our greenhouse gas emissions in line with UK government targets.”

Supercity currently operates six properties comprising a total of 289 suites, with a further three scheduled to open in 2024 (Leeds, York and Edinburgh).
