In an open letter to the chancellor, over 230 industry leaders, including Michelin-starred chefs such as Tom Kerridge and publicans like Jodie Kidd, alongside major companies like Burger King and Marriott International, have called for urgent support for the UK’s hospitality industry. The letter, initiated by UKHospitality, highlights the sector’s potential £1bn business rates increase in April 2024 and urges the Chancellor to freeze business rates, extend the 75% hospitality relief, and raise the cap to at least £2m. The industry faces challenges like rising costs and ongoing uncertainties, emphasising the need for government support to prevent business closures.

Crerar Hotels has promoted Marc Gardner to cluster general manager of Oban Bay Hotel and Glencoe Inn and Gathering. Gardner, with over 30 years of experience, previously managed the Oban Bay Hotel for four years and held a 12-year tenure at Loch Fyne Hotel and Spa. He expressed gratitude for the supportive environment at Crerar Hotels, emphasising the company’s role in fostering long-term careers in hospitality. Gardner looks forward to his new role, aiming to contribute to the continued growth and success of both properties.

Seaton Hospitality has acquired the Roker Hotel in Sunderland for an undisclosed amount. Previously operated by Tavistock Hospitality under the Best Western Hotels Premier Collection for two decades, the 43-bedroom Victorian property overlooks the North Sea, Roker Beach, and Roker Pier. Seaton Hospitality plans to revitalise the hotel’s features and establish it as a premier hotel and wedding venue in the North-East, marking a new chapter for the historic property.

Art’otel is set to open its newest venue in Hoxton, London, in March 2024. Boasting 357 art-inspired rooms, the hotel will offer panoramic views of London, destination bars and restaurants, an immersive art gallery featuring works from D*Face and other artists, and amenities like an indoor swimming pool, spa, sauna, steam room, and skyline gym. Collaborating with Digital Space, D*Face will showcase works throughout the hotel. The announcement follows the recent opening of Art’otel Battersea, marking the company’s second venture in the UK.
