Shepherd Neame has completed a £500k refurbishment of The Royal Albion Hotel in Broadstairs. The 10-week project included a major renovation of the restaurant, introducing a contemporary coastal feel with stylish tables and chairs. Five en-suite bedrooms underwent a complete transformation, featuring new furniture, décor, and luxury bathrooms. Each room retains a unique style dating back to 1776. Balconies with sea views were refurbished, offering premium amenities like Dyson fans and Nespresso machines. Marc Duvauchelle, the hotel’s general manager, expressed delight at the results, emphasising the premium experience for guests and maximising the seafront location.

The Stag and Huntsman, a country pub in Hambleden Valley, is set to relaunch with Sika Inns with a new Michelin-starred chef. The Culden Faw Estate property, often a film location, will feature revamped rooms and a new family-friendly suite. The nine rooms, receiving a makeover, will blend modern touches with traditional countryside aesthetics. Dom Robinson, the Michelin-starred chef, aims to offer creative menus with local ingredients, reflecting the pub’s picturesque setting. Sika Inns, formed by experienced individuals from The Harwood Arms, plans to enhance both local and travel-driven appeal while maintaining the pub’s charm.

Whitbread has engaged with 16 students from Middlesbrough College as part of its youth strategy, offering two days of work experience at a local Premier Inn. The initiative aims to support 500 young people in accessing a hospitality career, providing firsthand experience in various hotel departments. Certificates were awarded, and interested students may undergo a more in-depth, structured work experience programme, potentially leading to job opportunities. The initiative enhances networking opportunities with local managers and contributes to students’ future employability.

UKHospitality has unveiled a three-point plan for 2024 to position the hospitality sector at the forefront of policy making before the upcoming General Election. The plan focuses on generating investment through business rates reform, creating jobs via Apprenticeship Levy reform, and driving economic growth with a lower VAT rate. The sector, contributing significantly to the economy, seeks essential support and investment to achieve its growth potential.
