Public has confirmed it has acquired The Maybe Group, the force behind one of The World’s 50 Best Bars Maybe Sammy.

The Sydney-based group is a relative newcomer on the scene, launching just over a year ago with The Strand Hotel, followed by venues including Oxford House, the Lady Hampshire as well as El Primo Sanchez, a collaborative project with The Maybe Group, which opened in February.

“Public has grown at an incredible pace over the past 12 months and we are continuing this trajectory as we acquire The Maybe Group,” says Jon Adgemis, executive chairman.

It’s a milestone purchase for the group, which now counts Maybe Sammy, Sammy Junior and Maybe Frank as part of its portfolio – venues all masterminded by Martin Hudak, Vince Lombardo and Stefano Catino.

“We have an established and progressive working relationship with Public,” says Lombardo.

“The success of El Primo Sanchez and the feeling of family within Public meant there was no question when it came to joining Jon and the team.”

The sale marks the beginning of a new chapter for both groups, with future venues in the works.

“We’re feeling more inspired than ever with the exciting new concepts underway, and we’re looking forward to welcoming guests into the next generation of hospitality with Public and The Maybe Group,” says Lombardo.

2023 is set to be a big year for Public, which is fast expanding its presence.

The group currently owns 20 properties including a yet-to-be-named hotel in Bondi, the Kurrajong Hotel in Erskineville and The Town Hall in Balmain, which will all undergo restorations.

“These venues are all driven by the desire to create newly familiar and warm places that bring renewed energy to the neighbourhood,” says Public.
