The Mexican eatery is set to open next week, and is the latest venue from the socially conscious hospitality group founded by Shaun Christie-David.

The menu will be a mix of traditional Mexican cuisine, alongside elevated street food fare led by Head Chef Roman Cortes.

One meal will be donated to a centre in Mexico City every time guests dine in at the venue, and is the same centre where Cortes began his own journey of recovery from addiction.

Meals will also be donated to those in the Greater Sydney area, too.

The menu will also be a nod to Cortes’ mother Maru Navarro and the local cuisine of her birthplace Coyoacán, serving up dishes he had growing up and during his recovery.

Some of the highlights across the menu include the birria tacos cooked Jalisco style to honour Cortes’ grandfather’s hometown, along with the cochinita pibil which is a corn tortilla taco with pickled onions and pineapple from southern Mexico.

“It replicates authentic Mexican recipes which have been kept in the family for generations,” says Cortes when speaking about the menu.

“My purpose is to share the love I got from the most wonderful women I’ve met (my mum and grandmother). I do this, with the unwavering condition of always keeping their authenticity – if I cannot make it authentic, I won’t make it.”

Plate It Forward is also behind Sydney venues Colombo Social and Kabul Social, where they have donated over 150,000 meals to the Redfern and South Eveleigh communities.

“Coyoacán Social represents family, strength and a connection to culture. Serving Mexican food by Mexican grandmothers and grandfathers through an authentic, accessible and community driven approach,” says Christie-David.

“The hope is to give thousands of meals to people in Mexico and regular and steady employment to people who deserve it.”

Coyoacán Social will open on 17 April, and is located at Shop 8, 1 Locomotive Street, Eveleigh.
