Sydney-based Chef Orzio D’Elia is branching out from restaurants and into the bakery business with a new concept: Mia Dolci Italiani.

The Italian pasticceria, located in Sydney’s Alexandria, is a team effort between the Da Orazio restaurateur and Pastry Chef Riccardo Falcone, who joins after time at Rockpool.

“In Australia, we have bakeries on every corner,” says D’Elia. “In our hometown, it is pasticceria. After meeting Riccardo, we forged a true friendship whilst bonding over our upbringings and love of Italian food. We decided we wanted to bring a piece of our heritage here in Sydney.

“Through conversations and plenty of education on pastry-making, Riccardo opened my eyes to the possibilities in the space and Mia was born.”

The hybrid cake shop/bakery/cafe will open its doors in a converted warehouse space covering 400sqm on Euston Road, launching with traditional Italian desserts including ricotta cannoli and delizia al limone.

Guests will also be able to sample rub baba, torta della nonna, crostata di frutta, daily pastry specials and savoury options covering rotating foccacia and pizza al taglio.

Mia Dolci Italiani will be open for dine-in and takeaway, with patrons able to take a seat and enjoy a coffee in the cafe or take a peek into the chocolate room and open kitchen.

The venue is slated to open in early December and operate from Monday to Friday 6am-3pm; official opening date to come.
