Whitbread opens latest Hub by Premier Inn in Clerkenwell

The building was designed by architecture firm Sheppard Robson Architects and constructed above a tunnel serving the Thameslink national railway line

Whitbread has recently opened its latest hotel development in central London, Hub by Premier Inn Clerkenwell, which was officially opened by the Mayor and Mayoress of Islington on 29 March.

The new Premier Inn on Farringdon Road, Clerkenwell, which currently employs 31 team members, brings 180 compact and affordable hotel rooms into the centre of London.

The building was designed by architecture firm Sheppard Robson Architects and constructed above a tunnel serving the Thameslink national railway line.

This recent hotel opening grows Whitbread’s network of hub by Premier Inn hotels to 12 London locations, and 15 nationwide, with a further four hotels currently on site or in the advanced stages of planning in the capital.

Construction of the hub by Premier Inn hotel commenced in autumn 2020 and continued through the Covid pandemic.

Chris Walton, project and programme manager for Whitbread, said: “The hub by Premier Inn Clerkenwell hotel has proved to be one of the most technically challenging projects Whitbread has undertaken. The hotel was constructed in a very accessible and constrained location directly above a tunnel serving the Thameslink national railway line.

“The development shows Whitbread has the foresight, the skills and the will to take on challenging construction projects to create superb new hotels for our guests in central London and I am very proud of what we have created here. My thanks go to everyone involved in designing, constructing, and delivering the fantastic new building for us.”

Cllr Marian Spall, Mayor of Islington, said: “Turning what was previously a car park into this wonderful new hub by Premier Inn hotel was quite a feat of engineering. I was very impressed by the quality of the building Whitbread has created, and it is great that this development will bring new jobs to the borough. I am sure the hotel will be a huge success and well done to everyone involved.”
