Derrel’s is the result of the team-up of Public Hospitality’s The Lady Hampshire, Baba’s Place Creative, and Head Chef Brendan King who is taking cues from his Anglo-Indian heritage for the venue.

Located next door to The Lady Hampshire in Sydney’s Camperdown, Derrel’s is inspired by the much-loved British “caffs” and is open until 2am on Friday and Saturday nights.

The name Derrel’s comes from King’s grandpa, who was a source of inspiration for the dishes on the menu.

“This is my first chance to represent the food I love and eat all the time, and offer it up for everyone to experience,” says King.

“My nana never cooked growing up – it was always grandpa in the kitchen – and while we hope people are a little confused at the start, it’s a menu influenced by growing up as an Anglo-Indian in Sydney, whatever that means.”

Snacks on the menu include tandoori chicken wings (grandpa’s recipe); a butter chicken and gravy chip butty; and a soft potato-filled bread vada pav.

Derrel’s kathi roll selection will rotate regularly, with the opening menu featuring tandoori chicken, lamb seekh, and Hara Bhara Kabab options.

The curry plate comes with chutney, rice, and pickle with rotating options such as a butter chicken, pork vindaloo, and vegetable curry.

There’s also sides on the menu and a range of sweets including King’s grandpa’s late-night treat of a rolled-up partha with Nutella.

Baba’s Place Creative have partnered with King and The Lady Hampshire to produce the nostalgia-inspired fit-out which includes second-hand furniture seatings, 80’s Women’s Weekly magazines across the walls, and a 2000’s plasma TV playing classic films.

Derrel’s is located at 89 Parramatta Road, Camperdown, New South Wales.
